Film & Television

Air-Edel Recording Studios’ specialty is recording and mixing music to picture in 5.1, and we have the track record to prove it. Recent mix projects include Thor (Patrick Doyle), Cracks (Javier Navarette) and Pride & Prejudice (Dario Marianelli). We’ve also recorded as well as mixed countless scores with smaller lineups, such as A Lonely Place to Die (Michael Plowman), Another Year (Gary Yearshon), La Ligne Droite (Patrick Doyle) and Triangle (Christian Henson).

Situated right in the heart of London with excellent transport links, we’re easily accessible for both session musicians and those on production. Close proximity to the production houses in Soho means that many people aren’t far away from their regular place of work, and with numerous restaurants, cafes, bars and shops in the local Marylebone area we couldn’t be in a better location.

Recording
The Studio 1 live room comfortably seats 25 piece string, brass, woodwind or choir sections and our Steinway B Grand Piano is widely considered to one of the finest in London. Live and dead spaces, a high ceiling and floor to ceiling baffles ensure that the room is flexible enough for any session. Video tie-lines throughout the studio allow those in the control room and the live room to see the same picture.

Essential to the sound we get is our wonderful collection of vintage microphones, headed up by three Neumann U47s and an AKG C12. We also have handfuls of Neumann U87s, KM84s, Coles 4038s, Shure SM57s and many other industry standards as well as a few interesting surprises.

The control room is centred around a large format analogue Cadac desk and recording is handled by a Pro Tools HD3 rig.

Mixing
The Studio 1 control room was built from the ground up to mix music to picture, rather than simply being added as an afterthought. Our Dynaudio 5.1 monitoring system is permanently installed and picture is handled by a dedicated video distribution system, with the main screens mounted either side of the centre speaker. The 24 group Cadac desk allows for the printing of four simultaneous 5.1 stems, Uptown Automation provides instant fader recall and automation, and the new TC6000 mkII adds the best sounding 5.1 reverb around.

When the mix is especially ambitious, we have strong ties with numerous hire companies who can provide additional equipment.

During large mixes the live room often doubles as an editing room, with music editors setting up Pro Tools rigs and working simultaneously with the engineer over a dedicated Local Area Network.
