2011 was a fantastic year for Air-Edel Recording Studios. We had loads of exciting projects and plenty of old and new faces coming through the doors.
Film and Television
We started off the year mixing the music for the smash hit Thor. Patrick Doyle's epic score was recorded at Air Studios by Nick Wollage before relocating to Air-Edel Studio 1 for mixing. Thor went on to top the box office charts for weeks around the world.
It wasn't the only hit we mixed this year. In September Conrad Pope was in Studio 1 with Nick Taylor to mix his score for My Week With Marilyn, recorded by Pete Cobbin at Abbey Road and Air Studios. Additionally, Nick also recorded and mixed the Marilyn Monroe source music here at Air-Edel, which provide memorable opening and closing sequences for the film.
Michael Plowman has had a busy year with us, mixing the film scores for Treasure Guards and the hugely successful A Lonely Place to Die, which closed this year's London FrightFest, as well as the theme tune to animated TV show Tree Fu Tom.
Other film highlights include pre-records for Dario Marianelli's score for the new Anna Karenina film; the mixing of True Justice, the hit American TV crime series, with music composed by Guy Farley; recording the score for Film 4's The Imposter with up and coming composer Anne Nikitin; and recording for the BBC's hit drama Being Human with composer Richard Wells.
Rock and pop
It's also been a big year for us recording rock and pop, with Air-Edel fast becoming the go-to studio for string, brass, choir and piano overdubs, as well as a fantastic studio for tracking entire bands in one room together.
Emeli Sandé put the finishing touches to her debut album Our Version of Events with Nick Taylor in Studio 1, recording strings, piano, vocals and choir sections. Nick also worked on many occasions with Rosie Danvers and Wired Strings, recording strings for The Rifles, Stephen Street, Grafitti 6 and Fraser T Smith for Leona Lewis' single Hurt.
This year has also seen Andrew Lloyd Webber complete his cast album for The Wizard of Oz West End musical, Judith Owen recording her new album Some Kind of Comfort, and The South, made up of former members of The Beautiful South, record tracks for their forthcoming album.
Nick Taylor
Our in-house engineer Nick Taylor has had a busy year outside of Air-Edel too. As well as countless sessions at Air-Edel, he's engineered numerous times at Air and British Grove Studios, as well as travelling further afield to record in Budapest and to mix The Moth Diaries in Ireland with composer Lesley Barber.
Spoken word
As always, we've been busy with radio plays and drama productions. SweetTalk Productions were back to record the forth series of the hugely popular comedy series Inspector Steine, as well as the experimental drama Death Dance. Watershed Productions came in during May to record The Hireling.
Smaller scale readings for radio and audiobooks have been steady fixtures in Studio 2. Jarvis & Ayres have been in throughout the year working on various projects, including England, Their England which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Christmas day. Macmillan were also in for numerous recordings, such as Jon Ronson's book The Psychopath Test.
Overall, it was a great year for us and we look forward to seeing you in 2012!
